In-vehicle PC builds for survey vans and field work

Off-the-shelf PCs fail in vans. Heat, vibration, dirty 12V power, cramped mounting spaces — and none of them will take the specific capture or interface card your survey equipment needs.

I design and build compact, rugged mini-ITX systems around your exact hardware requirement, test them on the bench, and support them after they're bolted into the vehicle.

From CCTV survey van computers to broadcast trucks

Survey and inspection firms · Drainage & CCTV inspection · Utilities and field engineering · Mobile broadcast · Anyone who needs a full PC — not a tablet — working reliably in a vehicle.

How an in-vehicle PC build works — anywhere in the UK

  1. Requirement consult

The non-negotiable hardware (e.g. a specific PCIe capture card), the software stack, and the vehicle it's going into.

  2. Specification

Chassis, cooling, power and mounting chosen around that requirement. I'll tell you honestly where the constraints are.

  3. Build & bench test

Assembled and soak-tested before it ever sees the van.

  4. Deployment & support

Installation guidance, and ongoing remote support wherever the vehicle is.

Case study: rugged mini-ITX inspection PCs for Oneline Surveys

Custom in-vehicle inspection PCs built around their survey capture hardware, running daily in their vans — alongside the office network, Wi-Fi and CCTV that support the operation.

Why a specialist and not a box-shifter

Rugged PC vendors sell you what's in their catalogue. I start from your hardware requirement and build outward — which matters when the whole job depends on one specific card working in one specific space. And because I build it, I can actually support it.

Questions I get asked

What goes into a PC for a CCTV survey van?
Four things off-the-shelf machines don't handle: clean power from a vehicle's 12V supply, cooling that copes with a hot enclosed van, mounting that shrugs off vibration, and — usually the deal-breaker — a slot and drivers for the specific capture or interface card your survey software depends on. The build starts from that card and works outward.
Can you build around a capture or interface card we already own?
Yes — that's the normal starting point. Send me the card's model and the software you run with it, and I'll spec the chassis, power and cooling around it. If it isn't buildable in the space you've got, I'll tell you before any money changes hands.
We're not local to Dorset — does that matter?
No. Builds are assembled and soak-tested on the bench, shipped anywhere in the UK, and supported remotely wherever the vehicle happens to be.
